Estradiol Valerate Description and Indication

Estradiol Valerate is a female estrogen hormone. It is used to treat low levels of estrogen in the body which is caused by certain specific conditions and in the treatment of certain symptoms of menopause like vaginal itching, dryness or burning. It mainly acts by replacing natural estrogens in women who can no longer produce the required levels of the hormone. Estradiol Valerate is used in treating advanced prostate cancer where it acts by antagonizing male hormones.

It is available in the form of a long-acting injection that is injected into a muscle, usually once a month.

Estradiol Valerate Mechanism of Action

As the primary, most potent estrogen hormone produced by the ovaries, estradiol binds and then activates specific nuclear receptors. This agent has mild anabolic and metabolic properties, and can make blood more coagulable.

Estradiol enters cells freely and then interacts with a cytoplasmic target cell receptor. When the Estrogen receptor is bound to its ligand it can enter the nucleus of the target cell and regulate gene transcription. This leads to the formation of messenger RNA. The mRNA in turn interacts with ribosomes to produce specific proteins that express the effect of estradiol upon the target cell. Estradiol binds well to both estrogen receptors, ERα and ERβ.
