Ethinyl Estradiol Description and Indication

Ethinyl Estradiol belongs to the group of estrogens. Ethinyl Estradiol can be used as a hormone replacement for menopausal symptoms and in the treatment of menstrual disorders and prostate cancer in men. Ethinyl Estradiol generally binds to the estrogen receptor complex and enters the nucleus, activating DNA transcription of genes involved in estrogenic cellular responses. It has high estrogenic potency when administered orally, and is often used as the estrogenic component in oral contraceptives.

Ethinyl Estradiol is generally indicated for:

Ethinyl Estradiol Mechanism of Action

Estrogens diffuse into their target cells and interact with a protein receptor. Target cells include the female reproductive tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Estrogens increase the hepatic synthesis of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), and other serum proteins and suppress follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary.

Ethinyl Estradiol Contraindications

Ethinyl Estradiol is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:

Ethinyl Estradiol Adverse Drug Effects

The main adverse effects of Ethinyl Estradiol given in therapeutic dose are directly related to its estrogenic and metabolic effects.

Ethinyl Estradiol Drug Interactions

Estrogens or oral contraceptives: possible antidepressant toxicity may occur.
Grapefruit juice: increased Ethinyl Estradiol and 17-beta-estradiol effect, probably via a decreased first pass metabolism.
Estrogens: may facilitate the development of akathisia.
Phenytoin: a decrease in estrogen effect.
Smoking: reduces the clinical efficacy of estrogens.
1 gm/day of vitamin C: increased serum concentration and possible toxicity of estrogens, secondary to decreased metabolism.
