Norethisterone Acetate Description and Indication

Norethisterone Acetate is widely used for preventing unwanted pregnancies by inhibiting ovulation in women. It is also used in the treatment of other menstrual or uterine disorders which are caused due to progestin imbalance, including secondary amenorrhea, endometriosis, and abnormal uterine bleeding.

Norethisterone Acetate Mechanism of Action

Norethisterone acetate acts by thickening the cervical mucus, thereby making it more difficult for sperm to move towards the uterus. It also acts on the fallopian tubes and the uterus lining to prevent pregnancy.

Norethisterone Acetate Dosage

Norethisterone acetate is generally administered to prevent abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalances or to restore menstrual periods in the second half of the menstrual cycle in doses ranging from 2.5 to 10 milligrams, as advised by the physician. It can also be prescribed for treatment of endometriosis.
